This year’s 44th Belfast Festival at Queen’s (October 19 – November 4) is expected to be the largest of its kind in Ireland, combining the best of Irish, UK and international culture. Highlights of the event are Argentine tenor José Cura with the Ulster Orchestra; the Gipsy Kings from France performing their brand of ‘rumba flamenca’ and Dimpho Di Kopane, a celebrated musical theatre company from South Africa performing The Mysteries, medieval mystery plays based on Bible stories, once performed all over Europe on ‘pageant wagons’. The festival closing concert celebrates Shostakovich’s birth centenary with his Piano Concerto No.1 performed by the Ulster Orchestra.
