Made in Deptford, ‘best UK High Street’

In south-east London it is maritime Greenwich, the starting point of world time, that usually gets most attention. But nearby Thames-side Deptford has been getting plaudits from shoppers, including winning the Best UK High Street for Shopping award recently. The Made in Deptford Festival (May 19-21) provides further reason for visitors to choose Deptford as a place to extend their experience of the capital.

The festival’s creative themes of art, food, dance and heritage offer a chance to discover the enthusiasm of local people and organisations. Last year 300 groups and businesses took part and the event generated press coverage in publications ranging from Time Out to The Guardian. There’s plenty of history, too, as this was the site of the first Royal Dockyards, and the founding place of Trinity House in the early 1500s. The area surrounding Deptford Creek has always been the centre of attention for true English seafarers. No doubt the old sea-dogs found the shopping good, too.
