Ghost hunting at Surrey hotel

A four-star hotel in the Surrey hills south of London is taking advantage of its haunted reputation by offering its customers a ‘spook-buster’ upgrade.

A four-star hotel in the Surrey hills south of London is taking advantage of its haunted reputation by offering its customers a ‘spook-buster’ upgrade. Guests at the 15th century Lythe Hill Hotel, Haslemere are invited to sleep in the half-timbered Katharine of Aragon and Anne of Cleeves bedrooms which are associated with ‘unexplained voices, rattling keys, shadowy faces and the spectre of a top-hatted Victorian gentleman.’ Included in a special rate is apparatus including an infra-red webcam to record apparitions, a motion detector, a digital thermometer and a humidity measuring device.

There is a premium of £50 on the hotel’s £200 per night tariff per couple going ahead with this unusual upgrade, which also includes a special insurance policy premium and a bottle of locally produced mead (an alcoholic drink made with honey). The hotel has a spa for guests who want to de-stress after a busy night spent ghost busting. General manager David Armstrong says “the classic English ghost is now a business opportunity.” Reservations, tel. 01428 744814. Website: www.lythehill.co.uk
