London 2006 Event highlights

The ‘godfather of soul’, the master of sculpture and King George’s palace at Kew all feature in events coming up in London.

James Brown, Al Jarreau and Jamie Cullum will be among the international artists performing against the backdrop of Britain’s most famous Royal Palace, The Tower of London this summer (June 28-July 14). The Tower Music Festival brings 12 nights of a range of musical styles to an outdoor stage and the audience can picnic on the lawns of the moat. Website: www.towermusicfestival.co.uk.

The first major Rodin exhibition in Britain for 20 years will be on display at the Royal Academy (Sept. 23-Jan. 1). The exhibition will explore Auguste Rodin’s relationship with Britain and will include The Gates of Hell and The Thinker as well as works previously never seen outside of France. King George’s country retreat, Kew Palace in West London, reopens to the public following a £6.6 million conservation project (April 27-Sept.30). Situated within Kew Gardens the palace has been faithfully redecorated and furnished as George III and Queen Charlotte would have known it. Website: www.hrp.org.uk.

The popular Broadway musical Wicked comes to London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre this autumn (from Sept. 27). Wicked presents the untold story of the Witches of Oz, based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, and how a girl called Elphaba became the Wicked Witch of the West. Website: www.wickedthemusical.co.uk.
