Celebrity chef Oliver to open restaurant in Cornwall

Following the success of his restaurant in London, celebrity chef Jamie Oliver is to open a new restaurant in Newquay in Cornwall (May 22). Fifteen Cornwall (On the Beach, Watergate Bay, TR8 4AA) is situated on the first floor of the Extreme Academy, a surfing and extreme sports centre at Watergate Bay. It will offer spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean from floor to ceiling windows and balconies. As with the London restaurant, the purpose of Fifteen Cornwall is to provide disadvantaged local young people with the opportunity to build careers in the restaurant industry. The students are following an induction programme that includes meeting local suppliers to source the restaurant’s local seasonal menu.

The informal atmosphere of the restaurant will be complemented by a mix of fine art and graffiti on the walls by local artists. Diners will be able to see the chefs in action in the open kitchen. Design features include a reception desk carved from a reclaimed tree trunk and 78 liquid-drop shaped pendants flowing across the ceiling to provide the lighting. The resort of Newquay is best known as a surfing destination, and there is widespread anticipation that Oliver’s restaurant will give a major boost to the area. Cornwall is popular for its spectacular coastline, gardens and fishing harbours. Bookings, tel. 01637 861000. Website: www.fifteencornwall.co.uk.
