Shrewsbury recreates its summer season

Performances by Jools Holland, George Melly and Beverly Knight are among the 370 cultural and artistic events over 100 days at the ‘Shrewsbury Summer Season’ this year (May 19-Sept. 9). It recalls the 18th century tradition of the English Summer Season when this Shropshire town would be full of people promenading the streets and squares attending concerts, plays and parties.

Highlights include the Shrewsbury Folk Festival (Aug. 24-27) one of the longest established folk festivals in Britain, featuring Paul Brady and Salsa Celtica. In July, Shrewsbury commemorates the English Civil War (July 2-8) with a community play, re-enactments and a talk on Oliver Cromwell. Other events include the Shrewsbury International Street Theatre Festival (Aug.31-Sept.2) with the Rock and Roll Marionettes and USA Breakdancers; and the Shrewsbury Flower Show, a Dragon Boat Festival and a Local Food and Drink Fair. Shrewsbury is a medieval town in the delightful border country of England and Wales, 160 miles north-west of London.
